Pantethine is the metabolic precursor of the B vitamin pantothenic acid, which, in turn, leads to the formation of coenzyme A (an essential cofactor in energy metabolism). For many years, pantethine has been used in Japan, Italy, and Germany for the management of cholesterol. Only recently has pantethine been available in the United States, where it is sold as a dietary supplement.
A substantial body of research points to both the safety and efficacy of pantethine. It is important to note that only pantethine, not pantothenic acid, has demonstrated favorable effects upon cholesterol. Research demonstrates that pantethine can help promote healthy cholesterol in both men and women, including the elderly and individuals with diabetes mellitus.
Pantethine has been used in doses from 300 to 900 mg/day. A dosage of 600 mg daily is most frequently prescribed. The effect of pantethine upon the entire lipid profile makes it a solid dietary option for the promotion of healthy cholesterol.
EP® PANTETHINE is a Sustained Release Formulation because research has established that water soluble vitamins are better absorbed and are more biologically active when provided in the SR form.
