Product Overview
This calcium/magnesium formulation combines two of the most essential minerals for bone health, frequently consumed in less than optimal amounts even in a well balanced diet. Many individuals avoid dairy products, the principal source of calcium, and most magnesium-rich foods are infrequently consumed (such as canned salmon and sardines). Vegetable sources of calcium are also impractical, owing to poor bioavailability. Despite the challenge in achieving proper intakes of calcium and magnesium, their role is critical in maintaining strong bones.
Calcium requirements continue throughout life to ensure bone health and provide for regulatory functions in the blood. Magnesium aids in metabolism and assists in nerve and muscle fiber functions. Nearly half of the body’s magnesium is in the bones. Magnesium is a required component of ATP metabolism and essential to the body's use of glucose; the synthesis of protein, fat, and nucleic acids. In addition, magnesium, along with vitamin D, is needed for calcium absorption. A wealth of recent research points to the importance of these nutrients in maintaining bone health. Magnesium also helps promote dental health by holding calcium in tooth enamel.
An inadequate calcium intake contributes to low peak bone mass and has been identified
as one of many risk factors in the development of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist. Regular exercise and a healthy diet with enough calcium helps teen and young adult white and Asian women maintain good bone health and may reduce their high risk of osteoporosis later in life. Adequate calcium intake is important, but daily intakes above about 2,000 mg are not likely to provide any additional benefit.
Calcium may also have benefits in other areas aside from bone health. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration allowed for two qualified health claims to appear on dietary supplement labels. Those claims included: "Some evidence suggests that calcium supplements may reduce the risk of colon/rectal cancer, however, FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive" and Some scientific evidence suggests that calcium supplements may reduce the risk of hypertension. However, FDA has determined that the evidence is inconsistent and not conclusive.
