Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring nutrient synthesized by both plants and animals. It is a potent anti-oxidant, transition metal chelator, transcription regulator and critical cofactor in mitochondrial enzyme reactions. ALA supports healthy mitochondrial efficiency and reduces reactive oxygen species through multiple mechanisms. Its widespread use has demonstrated it is safe at doses of 300-600mg per day.
Mitochondria are the “power plants” within cells, responsible for converting fuel such as glucose and fatty acids into ATP, the energy “currency” of cells. As a result of aging, changes which reduce mitochondrial efficiency lead to loss of energy production and increases in free radical production. Through its effects on transcription factors and restoration of glutathione, ALA improves mitochondrial efficiency and ameliorates oxidative stress. Laboratory studies have shown that ALA reverses the age-related changes of mitochondria, restoring the mitochondria of aging rodents to that of younger animals. Additional research has identified that ALA can up-regulate mitochondrial biogenesis, or an increase in the number of mitochondria.
As a transition metal chelator, ALA can remove excess copper, iron, and other metals associated with oxidative damage and pre-mature aging. It has been shown to promote healthy cognitive and sensory-motor neuron function.*
