10 Ways to Exercise (When You Really Don't Want To)

We all go into an exercise plan with the best intentions. But following through can be rough. We all know that regular exercise helps ward off dozens of deadly diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure, certain cancers, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, plus it helps keep your weight in check and makes you feel good, physically and mentally. Even with this knowledge, getting out of your pjs and into your gym clothes can be a mental hurdle!

Whether you’ve got too much on your to-do list, a twinge in your knee, or a bed that’s just too inviting – we challenge you to keep your fitness goals this year and prioritize your health.

Here are 10 ways to motivate yourself to work out when you really, really, (really!) want to just stay in.

1. Make a rockin’ playlist.

Music can be the ultimate motivator. You hear some tunes and your toes start tapping without even thinking. Create a great, upbeat playlist and crank it up in your living room. We dare you not to start doing some jumping jacks!

2. Binge on Netflix.

Make a deal with yourself that you can only watch, “The Crown” when you’re on the treadmill. Not only will you find yourself sneaking in treadmill walks more often, but you’re likely to walk further every time as well.

3. Bribe yourself.

Save some things you’re really looking forward to until after you’ve done three workouts this week. When you’ve accomplished your goal, splurge on some new workout gear, indulge in a massage, or treat yourself to heart-healthy meal out.

4. Phone a friend.

Disappointing a friend is the last thing you want to do. Make a date with a friend to exercise, knowing that you can’t bail out at the last minute. Plus, you’ll have more fun when you work out with friends – which means that the habit is more likely to stick!

5. Fool yourself.

Make a deal with yourself that you only have to exercise for 10 minutes. Once you start your swim, walk, or jog, you’ll find that you don’t want to stop!

6. Make it a family affair.

If you find working out boring, choose activities your whole family can enjoy. Try Sunday family hikes, after-dinner walks, or daily games of tag. By choosing workouts that involve your family, you’re also making exercise a fun, positive habit for the next generation!

7. Have a goal in mind.

Sign up for a charity race, whether it’s a walk around the block or a 10K run. Create a training plan to keep you accountable and help you get across the finish line.

8. Try something new.

If you usually do a Zumba class, try kickboxing. If swimming laps is your go-to workout, try a water aerobics class instead. Mixing things up always gives you something to look forward to.

9. Put on your workout clothes.

Tell yourself you don’t have to work out, you’re just going to get dressed in your exercise gear. By the time you’ve laced up your sneakers, you’ll want to get out there and go anyway!

10. Contemplate your why.

What’s your reason for exercising in the first place? Is it to keep your heart in shape? Do you want to keep up with your children and grandchildren? Maybe you had a health scare, and you want to follow your doctor’s orders. Whatever your reason, reflecting on them for a few minutes will probably be enough motivation to get up and move around!
